Valve had announced on its Dota Blog page that they have banned 40,000 Dota 2 players for actively cheating. The way they had done this to trap players was using an exploit in game to get information that was not normally accessible to users during normal gameplay. Valve had learned that players were able to use third party software to read this data and give them a much unfair advantage. When they had learned how this was working they had patched it but also created a honeypot for these players.
What Valve had done was use their own tools against themselves. The data these tools were reading were instead replaced with information only these players could see and would then catch and ban them for cheating. Valve has stated that they are still working hard to fight and combat cheaters in their MOBA and make it a fair playing field for all players.

Valve warned that players caught will have their accounts banned from playing Dota 2 and will also show up on the players account to show all players they are banned and were cheating. This isn’t the only company working on ways to make changes, Ubisoft recently also announced they are fighting against cheaters on consoles with their new Anti-Mouse cheat detection.
