CoD players outraged

Before the launch of the H2M mod for Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on August 16, Activision shut down the project, sparking backlash from fans who accused the company of benefiting unfairly from the situation.

H2M was a mod built within Modern Warfare Remastered, featuring over 50 multiplayer maps from various Call of Duty titles, an extensive weapon selection, the original progression system, and all the classic killstreaks. Several content creators were given early access, and the early gameplay footage generated excitement among players.

Just days before H2M's release, Modern Warfare Remastered coincidentally went on sale for half price on Steam, leading to a surge in sales that made it the third best-selling game on the platform. The anticipation for the mod was seen as a key factor in this sales boost.

However, the excitement quickly turned to disappointment when the H2M development team announced, just one day before the mod's release, that Activision had issued a cease and desist letter, forcing them to halt all operations immediately and permanently.

CoD content creator Kalei pointed out that Activision was the biggest beneficiary of the H2M mod.

"You have to buy the game from Activision, so they pocket all the profit," Kalei noted. "It's a legitimate effort to support the older CoDs on newer servers and bring back nostalgia. So disappointing, but not surprising."

Fellow content creator LegacyKilla also criticized the timing of Activision's decision.

"To grasp the scumbaggery of this move, Activision waited until the day before the mod was set to release and a day AFTER a Steam sale for Modern Warfare Remastered ended (which the mod required)," LegacyKilla remarked.

The shutdown of H2M follows a pattern of other fan-made mods being shut down either before their release or shortly afterward.

In May 2023, Activision similarly shocked the CoD community by issuing a cease-and-desist letter to the Sm2 developers, who had spent over a year creating a free-to-play mod using the MW2019 engine.
